Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, the W Hotel was faced with numerous noise problems. There was the traffic noise inherent to all big cities, but there also was the problem of the bells and chimes from the church across the street. On top of this, the helicopter from the adjacent UCLA Medical Center took off and landed from its rooftop helipad. All this added up to serious noise infiltration issues in guestrooms.
Using a retrofit interior insulating window, Maine Glass successfully and cost-effectively soundproofed 140 guestrooms. Independent tests resulted in a noise reduction from over NC35 to below NC25, resulting in a greater than 10 decibel improvement. This equates to blocking out more than half the original exterior noise infiltration.
The Intercontinental Stephen F. Austin was suffering from noise complaints as a result of rooftop chillers and city noise.
The chief engineer Mike Frazer had to find a window application to solve the problem. He contacted a variety of window companies to install test units. Maine Glass worked closely with Mike Frazer to ensure an efficient and smooth installation to minimize guest disruption. One year after completion of the project he had this to say, "Noise complaints have been eliminated and the energy savings have been significant. Maine Glass interior windows are going to pay for themselves in less than 5 years."
"We used to get 20 to 50 noise complaints a week, now we get NONE."
