Sound STC Weight

Maine Glass’s most common glazed unit is a ¼” laminated piece of glass. It is a very beefy piece of glass and meets customers’ needs both for sound installation and heat loss insulation without being too heavy. Weight of glass can be limited in the ability to install and remove the glass safely from the interior of a building. Most of our customers want the ability to remove the glass at some point in the future for repairs or cleaning of the existing prime window. The heavier the glass the less likely this will be to perform maintenance on the existing window. We often get requests to put in thicker glass for acoustic reasons that double the weight but don’t offer that much better acoustic performance. Our windows are preferred as the best secondary glazing system. We also receive requests for thermal pane windows for better insulative performance. Thermal pane windows fail over time and add dramatically add to maintenance costs of a building and again to add enough extra insulation to offset these cost burdens. We can glaze with many different options but in the end the weight, strength and insulative values of ¼” laminated glass are the gold standard in our industry.

Many times, a hotel does not budget for a secondary glazing system and in the end it costs them money. Instead of replacing the windows in an older hotel, Maine Glass offers a maintenance free solution to update the existing building. The windows will save on energy and keep the rooms quiet and eliminate guest complaints due to outside noise. Historic hotels benefit from this as well, as our insulating windows comply with preservation standards.
